Western Regional NSA trains personnel to improve safety at matches

The Western Regional Sports Authority has held a one-day training programme for its security personnel to equip them to handle security and safety issues at the various stadia in the country.

In his welcome address at the ceremony on Thursday, June 18, 2020, the Regional Sports Director, Mr Joseph Alabi Bortey, stated that the rationale behind the programme is to equip the security personnel of the Authority with the requisite skills, ethics and strategic ways of dealing with security and safety issues at sports facilities.

He stated that the training programme is in line with the objective of the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Professor Peter Twumasi, to rebrand the authority and increase its vibrancy in the pursuit of its mandate.

Security expert and trainer, Chief Inspector Mawuli Ahiakpor, took the participants through vigorous techniques including self-defence, crowd control, physical endurance and others.

The second part of the training took place in the classroom, where participants received and learned from the instructions provided. The Resource person taught some practical and useful lessons based on his experience.

The programme was climaxed with the outdooring of new uniforms for the NSA’s security personnel as part of the rebranding programme of the  Authority, the statutory body responsible for sports development and promotion in Ghana.

The over four different sets of uniforms made up of short and long sleeves, regular uniforms, jackets (suit), and Lacoste to be matched with two sets of boots (long and short) and belt were displayed at a special parade at the forecourt of the Sekondi Sports Stadium.

The parade was supervised by Chief Inspector Mawuli Ahiakpor, Mr Bortey and Mr Adolf Ladji, the Regional Administrator.

Mr Alabi Bortey expressed his gratitude to the Director-General, Prof. Peter Twumasi and Management for the laudable initiative which will lift the image of the Authority, stressing that the security personnel are the first point of contact and therefore the need to improve upon their performance with the ongoing renovation of the Sekondi Sports Stadium.

He stressed that Management is keen on maintaining the facility to international standard and hence  the requisite training for the security unit to safeguard it.

He further urged the security personnel to be proactive and professionally conduct themselves to help police and protect the sporting facilities as well as ensure the protection of life and properties.
