We’re here to make impact — Legon Cities FC

Legon Cities believe they have made the club visible to the corporate world and built a strong brand after the then Wa All Stars swapped ownership and relocated to Accra.

The new owners bought the club from the former President of the Ghana Football Association, Mr Kwasi Nyantakyi.

The changeover took place last year, and the Communication Director of the club, Mr Kwame Dwomoh Agyemang, said the management had positioned the team to compete for space among the likes of Hearts of Oak, Liberty Professionals, Accra Great Olympics and Inter Allies in the capital.

Initiatives

Legon Cities have introduced a showbiz aspect of football by featuring music icons — including Shatta Wale, Medikal and Wendy Shay — at their matches.

Mr Agyemang said the initiative had helped the club promote its brand as a stylish entity in the local league.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, the communication director said the initiative had attracted people to associate with the team.

“The rebranding went well, but on the field of play the team could not translate such into success in the premiership before the first round of matches was suspended in March 2020,” he said.

While the capital is choked with teams competing in the Ghana Premier League, Legon Cities have received credit in the media for bringing some freshness into the competition with the appearances of artistes on their home match days.

New season

The league was cancelled after the chaos of the COVID-19 crisis, shutting off local football for the past four months.

Mr Agyemang said while the situation was compelled by circumstances beyond everyone’s control, the repercussions had been harsh on their finances.

“We have spent a lot of money to recruit new players for the second window and none of them has kicked a ball for the club. We are paying them without benefiting from the contract we signed,” he said.

Legon Cities were 15th with 16 points in the 18-club league before the suspension of football matches in March this year.
But the club’s spokesman expressed the hope that the team would improve on the field in the new season.
