Stars depart Seville; Waris drops off finally

Black Stars coach, Avram Grant, is now set for battle at the 2015 AFCON with his 23-man squad  expected to arrive in the Equatorial Guinean city of Mongomo tonight at 11pm local time after nearly two weeks of camping in Seville, Spain.

The Stars were expected to round off their preparations with a trial match against Bundeslinga side, Freibourg, after beating Portugal lower tier side, Onhanense 3-1 with goals from England -based Christian Atsu and Kwesi Appiah as well as Jordan Ayew. In their second game, the Stars were held to a 1-1 draw by Cambuur, a Dutch lower tier side.

According to Graphic Sports sources in Seville, the Stars will head for the tournament for the first time with no injury worries as Coach Grant is set to open Ghana’s campaign on Monday against the Teranga Lions of Senegal with the full complement of his squad.

Indeed, his attempt to include Turkey-based striker, Majeed Waris, failed to materialise as the player was unable to recover from injury.

Waris was left out from the 23-man final squad announced last week together with Samuel Inkoom and Moro Issa, but Coach Grant insisted that the player remained in camp for further observation.

While Inkoom and Issa left barely 24-hours after the final squad was announced, Waris remained until last Monday when the coach was convinced beyond doubt that  he could not make it to Equatorial Guinea.
