Shafiu Mumuni relishes move to Europe

Ex-Ashantigold skipper, Shafiu Mumuni, is relishing an opportunity to move outside the shores of Ghana to explore fresh challenges to enhance his potential as one of the best strikers in the country.

The prolific attacker, who has had stellar performances in the local league in recent times, has become the target of many foreign clubs who have been knocking on his doors for a move out of the ‘Soccer Miners’.

According to the 25-year-old poal poacher, he had achieved everything in the domestic league and now felt mature enough to move outside the country to seek fresh challenges that could make him a complete player in his blossoming career.

Speaking to The Mirror Sports in an interview, Shafiu identified the European leagues as his topmost priority because he believed they possessed what it took to add value and greater quality to his striking abilities by learning from different coaches and players.

“As a player, you have to move forward and challenge yourself in different leagues. I have achieved all the laurels in the domestic league and a move outside the country will help me work harder to improve on my abilities,” he explained.

“I have won the Ghana Premier League (GPL) with Ashgold, I won the Top 4, helped my team in the CAF Confederation Cup, won other trophies and I have made an impact in the GPL so it’s my dream to play in a foreign club.

“If I get an opportunity to leave the shores of this country, I won’t hesitate to take that offer. If an offer from a foreign club is good enough and will benefit me and my career, I will choose to join that foreign club than to sign again for a local club,” he stressed.

Shafiu was on the verge of joining Romanian champions, CFR Cluj, in January, but after passing his medicals, the deal fell through at the last minute due to the coronavirus pandemic which had resulted in the restriction on travelling abroad.

Currently, Shafiu is a free agent after his contract with Ashantigold expired early this month.

Mumuni was crowned the top scorer at the 2019 WAFU Cup of Nations after netting four goals at the tournament in Senegal.

He also made history by becoming the first-ever player to register a hat-trick at the tournament as a skipper of the Ghana B team against Cote d’Ivoire in the semi-finals.
