Take a look at his dream team...
Goalkeeper
Gianlugi Buffon - | Pirlo's Juventus team-mate and a World Cup winner with Italy, Buffon has made 124 appearances in European competition.
Defenders
Philip Lahm: A top full-back for years and now a World Cup-winning midfielder, Lahm lifted the trophy in 2013.
Fabio Cannavaro: "Without doubt one of the best central defenders to have ever played," Pirlo is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail of his former national team captain, who won the Ballon d'Or in 2006.
Paolo Maldini: A grand total of five European Cup titles spanning 18 years makes Maldini a shoe-in for Pirlo's side.
Cafu: The "trend-setting" Brazilian claimed Europe's top prize in 2007 after setting the standard on the continent for more than a decade.
Midfielders
Xavi: Three Champions League titles in six years underline the spectacular standards set by Xavi in Europe. He could yet add another this season.
Gennaro Gattuso: The tough-tackling heartbeat of an AC Milan side which won the trophy twice in 2003 and 2007. "Every team needs a Gattuso," Pirlo says.
Paul Scholes: Banned for the 1999 final, Paul Scholes played in the Moscow showpiece nine years later to win his second Champions League with Manchester United. A player Pirlo describes as "the truly great English midfield player of the generation".
Attackers
Kaka: Winning the Champions League in 2007 led to Kaka claiming the Ballon d'Or later that year. The Brazilian was one of the world's finest players during his first spell with the Rossoneri.
Filippo Inzaghi: The current AC Milan head coach scored 70 times in Europe, including in the victorious 2007 final.
Lionel Messi: Three times a winner, twice a goalscorer in the final and the current top scorer in the tournament's history. "I don’t need to talk in detail about what he is capable of," says Pirlo. "Everybody knows he is one of the greatest ever already."
