Members of the Referees Association of Ghana (RAG) are considering a nationwide boycott of all league matches below the Premier League after another assault case.
Just a week after a 21-year-old referee died — five days after he was battered by fans — another official has been assaulted during a second-tier match between Unity FC and Techiman City FC.
The recent development seemed to have irked the membership of RAG who are set to meet officials of the Ghana Football Association on Friday.
“Everybody is expecting us (RAG) to do something, but I must say everybody including the Ghana FA, media, and security must play a role." retired Fifa referee, Joseph Wellington, told Accra-based Radio XYZ.
“What happened over the weekend is unheard of because the security men told the referee his security cannot be guaranteed.”
A very frustrated top official of RAG went ahead to disclose that his outfit would take a position tomorrow before meeting the Ghana FA.
“We are seven people who make up the RAG, and we will meet on Thursday before a meeting with the Ghana FA on Friday.
“I know the Ghana FA itself is worried but I must admit we could consider a nationwide boycott when we meet on Thursday,” Joseph Wellington added.
