Nyantakyi debunks conflict of interest claims

THE president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Mr Kwesi Nyantakyi, last Wednesday debunked the notion that his role as FA president and bankroller of Wa All Stars football club amounted to conflict of interest.

He contended that it was only people with interest in football who  could manage the sport, saying his association with Wa All Stars did not in anyway amount to conflict of interest.

Nyantakyi was reacting to a question on his dual role as FA president and owner of the Wa-based club when the Ministry of Youth and Sports took its turn at the meet- the- press series in Accra.

He argued that  conflict of interest arose when one’s personal interest competed with one’s official position.

“Conflict of interest in itself is not offensive, it is the failure to adhere to rules governing conflict situations but where such a situation exists, there is the need for one to recuse himself or herself”, he stated.

He further explained that the FA had elaborate structural arrangements which dealt with issues accordingly without him having to personally intervene.

Earlier, the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, outlined the vision of the Ministry for the year, as well as its achievements last year.

He said the absence of a comprehensive national sports law had created a lot of problems for the Ministry, adding that  moves were underway to replace the old sports law of 1976 which would create the opportunities to attract corporate sponsorship.
