Medeama have progressed to the final qualifying stage of the CAF Confederation Cup despite losing 0-1 to Zesco United at the Levy Mwanawasa stadium in Ndola yesterday. They advance on a 2-1 aggregate scoreline.
The ambitious Ghanaian side held their nerve after going down 0-1 courtesy Jackson Mwanza’s 50th minute strike but qualified to the final qualifying stage of Africa’s inter-club competition.
Zesco United needed to overturn a 2-0 deficit from the first leg but found their Ghanaian counterparts difficult to crack as they put up a solid display .
Ya Ziko dominated the first half to an incredible extent, where Medeama could only thank Zesco’s profligate finishing in front of goal.
Zesco United’s opener set up what was expected to be an explosive and nerve-racking moment for the visitors but they held their own with experienced Michael Helegbe and Kabiru Moro in the thick of affairs.
With Medeama practically through at 2-1 on aggregate, Zesco decided to make a match of it and had the temerity to actually score with their first real attack.
The Tarkwa-based side now have a real chance to make history as they face the final hurdle before qualifying to the group phase of the competition.
They will be entered into a draw tomorrow to determine their next opponent.
