Kumasi Asante Kotoko’s bid for a successful defence of the Premier League title was given a boost Sunday when they handed Medeama SC a 4-1 thrashing at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi and stretching their lead to a seven-point gap between them and their arch rivals Accra Hearts of Oak who dropped home points against Aduana Stars after 2-2 at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium.
The visitors, who are yet to beat the Porcupine Warriors since they burst onto the elite scene some three seasons ago, were once again no match for the homesters who went on rampage with Seidu Bancy giving meaning to his revival as the leading predator in the Kotoko outfit when he earned a brace in yesterday’s demolition.
Midfielder Jordan Opoku and Prince Baffoe added to the rout. But the visitors, who resisted the Porcupine Warriors at the same venue last season forcing them to split honours, once again proved unyielding and rebuffed all the earlier promptings of the defending champions for 40 minutes before the homesters broke the deadlock.
At the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium, Coach Mohammed Polo failed to sustain the winning spirit of the team under his guidance as Aduana Stars managed to claw a point from the Phobians who fought from behind in the second half to split the spoils in a gruelling encounter.
Incidentally, it was the Phobians who shot ahead early in the first half through Kofi Abanga, a former Aduana star, on the 15th minute, but Alex Asamoah of Kotoko fame pulled even before recess.
The Dormaa Boys surprisingly took the lead and held on to it before Hearts’ Winful Cobbinah equalised for his side on the 68th minute.
In other matches, Sekondi Hasaacas secured an impressive 2-0 win over King Faisal at the Sekondi Stadium in Essipon.
Goals from Richard Yamoah on the sixth minute and 39th minute by Samuel Afful helped Hasaacas to carry the day.
At the Tema Stadium, Amidaus Professionals beat Inter Allies 2-0 with goals from Isaac Owusu and Isaac Amoah.
But AshantiGold managed to share the spoils with Bechem United at Bechem after drawing 2-2.
