After masterminding the qualification of the Black Stars to the 2015 Africa Nations Cup (AFCON) slated for Equatoria-Guinea early next year, the caretaker coach of the Black Stars, Maxwell Konadu, says he is ready to support whoever the Ghana Football Association (GFA) appoints as the substantive coach of the senior national team.
Knowing very well that the FA was already talking with former Israel and Chelsea coach, Avram Grant, as the substantive coach for the team, Coach Konadu who was responding to calls that the FA regularise his current position to take the team to the AFCON 2015, said the decision as to who managed the senior national team rested in the bosom of the GFA.
“You know the FA has already made it clear that they have an assistant coach and so once you are coming as a coach to head the team, you know that you are coming to work with an assistant coach,” Coach Konadu told the Daily Graphic in an interview yesterday.
According to him, even though he enjoys a very a good working relationship with the players and the entire management team, the decision as to who must be in charge of the Stars at any particular period is the prerogative of the FA.
The former Wa All Stars and Asante Kotoko coach was full of praise for his players for their splendid perfomance against the Hawks of Togo at the Tamale Stadium last Wednesday, and said the 3-1 victory was made possible because the boys were determined to redeem their image.
“The young guys needed to prove a point and that also went a long way to help us in the match,” he explained.
Coach Konadu expressed concern about the seeming antagonism that had reared its head into the nation’s football, saying “football is a sport we all enjoy but now it is more like a do-or-die affair and that baffles me”.
“In football you cannot win all the time but anytime the unexpected happens there is some kind of confusion.’
He called for restraint and expressed appreciation to all, especially the fans of Tamale, the GFA and the media who supported the team in diverse ways to qualify for AFCON 2015.
