First times in every experience are supposed to be special and for Ghana's goalkeeper Razak Braimah, he wished his first African Cup of Nations (AFCON) was one that began on a winning note.
The Milandes FC goalkeeper was last Monday selected ahead of known Fatau Dauda in Ghana's opening game against Senegal in Group C, and even though he did a pretty decent job, not showing any jitters on his first outing, he unfortunately picked two balls from his net, when the Black Stars lost their opening match 1-2.
"I don't want to forget my first AFCON but I wish I could forget my first match. That was not what I hoped for, but in football those things happen and it becomes an unforgettable moment.
"I can't pride myself of being the best, but when I was told I was going to start, my prayer to God was to take away any nervousness and help me put up my best to help the team win, but when it ends in the manner it did, you are also left a bit sad," the 27-year-old told the Graphic Sports.
Braimah showed bravery against the Senegalese, especially in the second half when the onslaught was incessant, making good saves of some scary shots. He, however, could not stop the two glancing headers from Mame Birim Diouf and Moussa Sow who scored in injury time.
And what went on in his mind during those few moments before the injury time goal?
"I was eager to get the ball and just kick it out of our goal area, the action was on my right and with the defenders on alert, I felt that side was safe, but Sow apparently saw a gap and took advantage of it. I felt very very sad at that moment. A draw would have been a fair and a consoling result.
"However, we don't have to brood over that too much. There are still two matches to be played. I will be ready when given the chance again. The start is painful experience, but the chance is one that I will forever cherish in my career."
