The management of Accra Hearts of Oak will consider giving their perennial rivals Kumasi Asante Kotoko a guard of honour during their league tie on Sunday only if it is proposed by the Premier League Board (PLB).
The guard of honour in association football involves teams showing appreciation for the champions of their own division by applauding them as they appear on the pitch. The applauding team forms two lines to make a corridor, and the league winners run through the corridor in a single file.
The Chief Executive of Kotoko, Opoku Nti, in an interview with Kumasi-based radio station Ash FM, entreated the Phobians to honour his side with the guard of honour but the spokesperson of Hearts, Muheeb Saeed, contended that such a practice was alien to Ghanaian football and his outfit would only consider such a proposal from the PLB.
“The guard of honour has never been done in Ghana but if it is an innovation management will consider it and come out with a response. But for now no one has mentioned it to us, so I can’t tell what management’s response will be,” Saeed said.
The Porcupine Warriors won the 2013/2014 First Capital Plus League with two games to spare and face Hearts this Sunday at the Baba Yara Stadium in their 100th meeting.
