Heart of Lions promise Premiership return next season

The Administrative Manager of Kpando Heart of Lions, Felix Bewu, has predicted a Ghana Premier League comeback next season when government paves way for football to resume.

The Kpando-based club was relegated from the elite division in the 2014 /15 season, and has since been competing in the second tier of Ghana football for the past five years.

The once vibrant Premiership side has failed to secure the ticket to the elite league after many attempts, and that has remained a huge burden on the club’s head.

In an interview with the Graphic Sports, Mr Bewu said the club came close to qualifying in the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons but their efforts only yielded a second place finishing behind league leaders in Zone Three.

“We started well in the 2018/19 season but unfortunately the Anas Number 12 expose and the subsequent suspension of football activities by the state for nearly two years made it impossible for the league to continue and that affected our chances,” he disclosed.

He disclosed that they had a consistent and solid technical team led by Coach Ben Fokuo who had put together a disciplined team which was working together to fulfil the club’s ambition.

According to him, the supporters within their catchment area had been very supportive in their bid to return to the elite division and, therefore, assured of a Premier League slot in the 2021/2022 season as they prepare to come back stronger.

Bewu noted that the decision by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council to cancel the 2019/2020 season was done in the interest of saving lives; hence, as sad as it was, it was for a good course.

Heart of Lions were fourth in Zone Three of the Division League One with 25 points before the Executive Council of the GFA suspended football activities in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.
