Ghana's powerful delegation at the annual congress of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in Cairo is confident the country will win the bid to host the 2017 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) when the decision is made tomorrow.
Algeria, Gabon or Ghana will be chosen tomorrow as the hosts of the 2017 African Cup of Nations finals.
Over the past few weeks, all three countries have stepped up their campaign to lobby the CAF executive members to vote in their favour.
The former Youth and Sports Minister for Ghana, who led the bid campaign until he was moved from that Ministry last month, was optimistic that Ghana would be chosen.
“We are not just a great football nation, but we proved during AFCON 2008, what great hosts we are. The infrastructure is already in place and we would not have to start preparing from scratch,” Mahama Ayariga, the former Minister, who is part of Ghana’s delegation to the Cairo meeting said.
The decision to get new hosts for the 2017 edition of Africa’s flagship tournament arose after the original hosts, Libya, pulled out due to the political unrest in the country.
Apart from deciding on the AFCON hosts, CAF will also conduct the draw for the qualifiers, which will include Morocco and Tunisia.
Morocco had been banned from taking part in the next two editions of the tournament after they failed to host the 2015 event but were reinstated after winning their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Tunisia avoided a ban after apologising to Caf for accusing the governing body of bias.
