The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has noted with profound regret the tragic death of referee Kwame Andoh Kyei.
The 21-year-old assistant referee suffered injuries after he was beaten up during the second division match between Gold Stars and Naa Joe United at Bordie last week Sunday.
He died last Friday after he had been rushed to the hospital earlier in the day because of the injuries. Doctors are yet to fully establish the cause of his death.
In a statement yesterday, the FA said its thoughts and prayers and those of the wider GFA membership were with the late referee's parents Sophia Nketiah and Kwadwo Appiah, his family and his wide circle of friends at this sad time.
Kyei was regarded as one of the association’s most promising up-and-coming referees and was highly respected by his peers.
The GFA, the statement added, had been in touch with the late referee's family since his passing to assure them of the football governing body's support in their period of grief.
A delegation from the Western Region Football Association’s (WRFA) Executive Committee was expected to visit the family in Prestea yesterday to sympathise and inform them of the preliminary action to be taken.
Meanwhile, the GFA has ordered the WRFA’s Executive Committee to provide the full facts of their preliminary investigation into the events surrounding referee Kyei’s death.
A meeting of key stakeholders will be called by the FA after receiving the report to examine the immediate action to be taken while the police continue with their investigations.
