Chelsea are on course to become the most dominant team in English Premier League history by clinching this season’s title.
Jose Mourinho’s side have spent the entire season either top or joint top of the table and can set a new record for the number of days spent at the summit.
Chelsea have officially been in first place since August 30, meaning they can set a new record of going 274 days at the top of the table if they stay there until the end of the season.
Tottenham Hotspur are the only other team to have briefly been in first place, as they had a better goal difference than Chelsea after just two games.
Manchester United currently hold the record for the most number of days at the top of the Premier League, having spent 262 days in the lead in 1993/94, which Chelsea can overtake on May 13.
Arsenal’s team that went an entire season unbeaten were top of the table for 216 days, while this season’s Chelsea side, who have lost twice in the Premier League, have led the way for 230 days.
“It's become something normal for us this season to know that we are top of the league,” said Mourinho. “To win the league we need five victories and one draw.”
Mourinho’s Chelsea already hold the Premier League record for securing the most number of points during a season after winning the title with 95 points in 2004/05.
