Herve Renard: Black Stars can win AFCON

Two-time AFCON winning coach, Herve Renard, has hinted that the only factor that can help the Black Stars of Ghana to end their AFCON drought is through team work, sacrifice and understanding the passion of African football.

According to Renard, Ghana have the capabilities of winning the trophy as they are not far from winning the AFCON but the players and the technical team should recognise the support the country gives them and plays towards it.

The Frenchman was the assistant coach of Claude Le Roy for the Black Stars team in 2008 as they reached the semi-finals of that year’s tournament. He has gone on to win the competition with Zambia in 2012 (beating Ghana in the semis) and Cote d’Ivoire in 2015 (going past the Black Stars in a penalty shootout).

In an interview with TV3’s Juliet Bawuah on Saturday, Renard believed the major factor that can help Ghana join the likes of Cote d’Ivoire, Zambia and Algeria in the circle of AFCON winners in recent years is through commitment and dedication of players.

“I think Ghana is not far from winning an AFCON title but the players must play for the Ghana flag.

“They have to be proud of their country. They need to imagine the number of people who stop their regular lives to watch them play either at home or away. This is because in Africa, football is a passion and the team must play for the people,” he noted.

“When I won the AFCON with Zambia, people kept telling me that the team had placed Zambia on the map. It was strange hearing this but I realised how important it was for the fans.

“They were so proud of the feat and it will be the same thing for Ghana. This is how to bring a team together to win the AFCON,” he said.

Ever since the Black Stars won their last trophy in 1982, they have come close to the trophy, losing the final in 1992 to Cote d’Ivoire and made two AFCON finals in 2010 and 2015 but failed to win the trophy after losing 1-0 to Egypt in the 2010 tournament in Angola and 8-7 on penalties to Cote d’Ivoire in the tournament hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.
