Farouk Miya's goal earned Uganda a 1-0 win over Comoros in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier played at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala on Sunday afternoon.

As a result, Uganda has qualified for the 2017 AFCON finals for the first time since 1978, while Comoros failed to book their place at the finals.

The Cranes of Uganda dominated the opening stages of the game, but they failed to beat Ali Ahamada in the Comoros goal-post.

The Belgium-based Miya was the end-point of a scrambled finish to ensure The Cranes finished the qualification round very strongly as Group D runners-up, behind  Burkina Faso who needed a late win over Botswana.

With 13 points safe in the bag, Uganda finished as one of the two best group runners-up to finally progress to the elusive stage.

Goals from Mame Diouf and Balde Keita ensured Senegal defeated Namibia 2-0 in the Africa Cup of Nations Group K qualifier at the Stade Léopold Sédar Senghor in Dakar last Saturday night.

Following the defeat, Ricardo Mannnetti's side have failed to reach the continental showpiece in Gabon next year as they remain placed at number three with six points.

Despite having already reached the tournament next year, the Lions of Teranga managed to remain disciplined to fight for a win at home. —PAS
