Wasiru Mohammed to make instant hit in US debut

Ghana’s World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Global super bantamweight titlist, Wasiru ‘Gyatabi’ Mohammed, wants to make an instant impact in the US when he makes his foreign debut against Mexico’s Florentino Perez Hernandez on April 10.

Wasiru believes a big win over Hernandez will help him make a statement in a division which has many tough opponents.

The 24-year-old Ghanaian recently signed a promotional deal with American-based D&D Boxing, headed by Cameron Dunkin, which enables him to fight on a Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) card on SHOWTIME Championship Boxing.

Having gone over a year since last making an appearance in the ring, Wasiru is slated to move to the US to begin his quest for world title opportunities.

In an exclusive interview with the Graphic Sports, the hard-hitting fighter explained that he was looking forward to seizing the opportunity of fighting on American soil.

Wasiru expected a very different climate but was ready to embrace an intensive training regimen which would enable him to acclimatise in time for his debut fight in the US.

“It is going to be my maiden fight outside Ghana and I have to take up the opportunity to make an instant impact on American soil,” Wasiru said.

“The only statement to make will be an emphatic win over Hernandez and I am hopeful of achieving that.

“As you know, there are several big names in the division and I can only challenge them if I am able to take my chances, which is to win this fight,” he noted.

Wasiru is undefeated in 12 professional fights with 11 knockouts. In his last bout in January 2020, he dismissed John Amuzu of Benin in seven rounds to retain his WBO title.

Hernandez also goes into the fight with a record of 14 wins, five defeats and two draws from 21 bouts. His last fight with Alan David Picasso in June last year was declared a no-contest.
