Tagoe shrugs off title loss

Emmanuel TagoeGhanaian boxer, Emmanuel ‘Game Boy’ Tagoe, says he is not interested in pursuing any legal action against the organisers of last Saturday’s  IBF International junior lightweight championship bout with Geraredo Robbles after he was stripped of the belt for being overweight.

The boxer, who touched down at the Kotoka International Airport yesterday after his victory over Robbles at the Morongo Casino Resort and Spa in Cabazon, California, said he was focusing on bigger challenges ahead and would not be detracted by “a mere belt” which was just a symbol to his victory.

Explaining circumstances why he was denied the belt, Tagoe, who is managed by Asamoah Gyan’s Baby Jet Promotions, said during the weigh-in, he weighed two pounds above the accepted weight, but on a different scale he fell within the accepted weight limit.

He said due to that discrepancy,  a confrontation ensued and it was finally agreed that he was given two hours to shed weight. But because he could not make the weight it within that time, it was decided that he would not receive the belt even if he won the bout.

The Bukom-based boxer said he was infuriated by that decision and decided to prove to them he was a tough boxer by winning convincingly, stating that the most important thing was to come home with victory even without a title belt.

Tagoe, who was welcomed by a sizeable number of his supporters, said he was close to a world title fight in Puerto Rico and was, therefore,  going to work on the proposed world title fight.
