Wladimir Klitschko's left hook was too much for Kubrat Pulev

Klitschko could win fifth title

Wladimir Klitschko could soon add the WBC heavyweight title to the four he already holds.

Mauricio Sulaiman, president of the World Boxing Council, has told a German weekly that Klitschko could get an opportunity next year to complete his collection.

Klitschko already holds the IBF, WBO, IBO and WBA belts. Bermane Stiverne of Canada is the WBC champion.

Sulaiman has been quoted as saying: "Wladimir is a true boxing icon. The WBC fully and completely supports a [unification] fight."

Stiverne is due to defend his title against American Deontay Wilder on January 17. Klitschko will then have the right to challenge the winner.

The Ukrainian, who operates out of Germany, knocked out IBF mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev of Bulgaria in the fifth round last weekend to retain his titles.

That makes him the International Boxing Federation, World Boxing Organisation, International Boxing Organisation and World Boxing Association champion. His brother Vitali, who retired to go into politics in the Ukrain, used to hold the WBC belt.

"I would like to bring that title back to the family," Wladimir told Sport Bild.

He has made 17 defences of heavyweight titles and is closing in on the record of 25 held by Joe Louis. The last of his three defeats was more than a decade ago. His record includes 54 knockouts in 63 victories.

His handlers are probably considering one of American Bryant Jennings, and either Dereck Chisora or Tyson Fury of Britain as his next opponent. If he decides to go for the WBC title first, the other hopefuls may have to wait.
