Isaac Dogboe: Win was a warm-up to revive my career

Former WBO super bantamweight champion, Isaac Dogboe, says his win over Chris Avalos is a warm-up towards reviving his career as he expresses the hope to stage a stronger comeback to become a world champion again.

Dogboe successfully launched his comeback last Tuesday night with an eighth round technical knockout (TKO) over America’s Avalos in their featherweight fight at the MGM Grand Conference Centre in Las Vegas.

The last time the 25-year-old boxer fought was against Emanuel Navarrete who stopped him in the 12th round of their WBO junior featherweight championship rematch in May 2019.

Many thought Dogboe’s career was over and a loss to Avalos could have ruined his career. However, the timely victory has restored his confidence to dream of becoming a world champion again after his two consecutive defeats to Navarrete in 2018 and 2019.

Dogboe, after defeating Avalos, said he had been through a hectic time without a win so the victory was a warm-up to restore his career to become a champion again. He also hailed his new trainer, Barry Hunter, as the brain behind the victory.

“It’s been a tough 14 months but God has been with me every step of the way. It’s been a tremendous road but finally, we’re coming back; we’re still warming up.”

”I had to listen. I could hear his voice telling me to just take my time and relax.

“Sometimes I was more or less like a little bit tensed and once I listened and went with the flow, everything was just flowing off the jabs and I felt great,” he stressed.

Throughout the bout, Dogboe’s trainer, Hunter, was heard shouting instructions to Dogboe, urging the Ghanaian to move in to finish his opponent before the bell went to signal the end of the fight in round eight.
