Four suspected armed robbers killed in shoot-out with police
Four suspected armed robbers were last Wednesday killed in a gun battle with the police on the Anhwiankwanta and Obuasi road. They were alleged to have opened fire when the police, who had been monitoring their activities for a while, tried to enquire them where they were going with the arms that they were unloading from a taxi-cab.

The four, all suspected to be foreigners were killed when they engaged the police in a shootout when they were being apprehended.
The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. in an area between Anhwiankwanta and Obuasi.

Items retrieved from them included two AK-47 rifles and one pump action gun, two mobile phones, 129 AK-47 ammunitions two empty shells, 24 live cartridges and an amount of GH¢123.00.
Three of the men are suspected to be of Fulani origin and one is suspected to be a Nigerian.
Though the police could not give the names of the victims, they identified two of them as being ex-convicts and gave the name of one as Shaibu, who is said to have been on remand for another robbery offence.
Operations on Kumasi-Obuasi road
Briefing the press shortly after the incident, the Deputy Ashanti Regional Commander of Police, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Osei Kwaku Ampofo-Duku, said about a month ago, the police picked up intelligence on the activities of some armed robbers who had been operating along the Kumasi-Obuasi road, robbing travellers on that stretch of road of their valuables.
He said the police detailed both uniformed and plain clothed men to the area to monitor their movements and also intensified its patrols in the area and kept a close eye on the gang.
According to him, on Wednesday afternoon, during its normal patrol exercise, the team saw an Opel Astra taxi cab with registration number AE 849-12 in an area between the Anhwiankwanta and Obuasi road, close to the bridge.
He said the plain-clothed policemen took a closer look at the occupants and realised that they were offloading arms and they quickly alerted the patrol team which was stationed close by.
Mr Ampofo-Duku said the plain-clothed men then approached the occupants to enquire of them where they were taking the arms to.
Without any provocation, the victims opened fire on the plain-clothed men and narrowly missed two of them.
The timely arrival of the patrol team to the scene saved the plain-clothed men as they returned fire, gunning down all the four in the process.
Their bodies have since been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital mortuary.
