Ex-boxers challenge new GBA board

The Retired Boxers Association has urged the new leadership of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) to chart a path to revive local boxing on all fronts.

The association said the massive potential still untapped in the sport required attention and urgent steps to return Ghana boxing to its best times.

The convener of the association, Ben Tawiah, said the personalities elected at the recent polls provided hope of better days for Ghana, and urged their new executive members to live by their promises.

Legal practitioner Peter Zwennes, who has about three decades of association with boxing, including a time as vice chairman of the body, was elected last month as the president of the new GBA, alongside six others, for a four-year mandate. One more slot for an executive member remains to be filled.

“Like Mr Zwennes, all the personalities have deep knowledge about boxing. These are men who have been in boxing for long and know the challenges and opportunities on hand,” Mr Tawiah, who once held the national lightweight title, told the  Daily Graphic.

“We trust in their leadership to bring about the changes that will impact positively on Ghana boxing and push the sport to new heights,” he added.
