Commey set for world title shot

Undefeated boxer Richard Commey is set for the first ever world title bout in Ghana as he comes up against American Robert Easter Junior for the vacant IBF lightweight title at the Accra Sports Stadium at a yet-to-be-announced date.

The 29-year-old Bukom-born fighter, who has won all his 24 bouts, was conspicuously absent at last Saturday’s 41st SWAG Awards Night to receive his Professional Boxer of the Year award, as he had been busy with his training regimen in the United States in preparation for his biggest night in boxing on home soil later this year.

At a press briefing yesterday at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra to announce the upcoming bout, Commey’s manager, Michael Amoo-Bediako, was emphatic that Ghana would host the bout as negotiations had begun between the two promoters, Al-Haymon and  Nisse Sauerland on July 6.

Mr Amoo-Bediako, who recounted Commey’s struggles and hard road to his dream world title shot, was confident the Ghanaian would emerge a world champion by handing the 25-year-old American his first defeat after 17 professional fights.

Commey’s trainer, Carl Lokko, depicted the impending bout as a date with fate for his boxer because they had worked their way to the top and looked forward to  this great opportunity which they would not let slip through their hands.

“I have waited long for this opportunity and now it has come, not only in onefold but also in my home country. I won’t disappoint Ghanaians,” an emotional Lokko predicted boldly.

He was grateful to Amoo-Bediako for his efforts, while expressing profound gratitude to boxing officials Yoofi Boham, Ataa Eddie Pappoe, Henry Manly-Spain, who were all present at yesterday’s event, having played an immense role to ensure the world title bout came into fruition.

Respected promoter, Mr Boham, on his part, said he had long predicted a great future ahead of Commey as a future world champion, while the boxer was practising kick-boxeing before switching to the pugilistic sport.
