Agbeko also failed to get through to the semifinals of the middleweight tournament in which they were competing.

He was in trouble in the third round and the fight was stopped 66 seconds into the fourth. His record now stands at 15-1, with 15 knockouts. Gatica, from Texas, improved his record to 14-2; 6.

The 21-year-old Agbeko, a former Ghanaian judo champion with a diploma in journalism, disappointed in his US debut after winning each of his 15 professional fights inside the distance.

After stopping the likes of Francis Mensah and George Amuzu in Accra, where all his fights had taken place, Agbeko failed to take charge at the start and was soon on his way back to the dressing rooms.

“I trained really hard for this fight; maybe too hard! I gassed out and that’s it but I’m fine. Thanks to everyone who came out to support me. I’m going stay in the gym and be the best that I can be. Glory be to Allah,” Agbeko apologised on his Facebook page barely an hour after the fight.
