Ashie, ‘Game Boy’ to rumble again in December

One of boxing’s fiercest rivalries will be re-ignited on December 26 when hard-hitting George ‘Red Tiger’ Ashie and Emmanuel ‘Game Boy’ Tagoe slug it out in a rematch of their controversial fight two years ago.

Already, promoter, Alex Ntiamoah Boakye, is suggesting the clash will provide Ghanaians more thrilling fight than the much-talked-about Ayittey Powers vs Bukom Banku showdown this year.

The Box Office Promotions CEO believes Ashie and Tagoe are younger and more professionally oriented, hence the Boxing Day fight is unlikely to suffer objections from traditional authorities and other controversies which characterised the Powers-Banku clash in Accra.

“The fight will be a collaboration between Box Office Promotions and Asamoah Gyan’s  Babyjet Promotions; we are at the negotiation stage with the management of both boxers and issues such as prize money and the weight of the boxers will be decided today. But Game Boy and Ashie have agreed in principle to a rematch,” Mr Boakye said.

“The fight will be bigger and break the records set by the Banku-Powers bout because in December there will be no objections from the traditional authorities and the two fighters will not come out with excuses based on their religious backgrounds,” he stressed.

Mr Boakye also contends that the rematch will be as close as it was in November 10, 2012 when Tagoe secured the vacant WBA International Lightweight title with a majority decision which the judges scored 114-114, 115-113 and 116-112.

“With Banku and Powers, it was an 80 per cent certainty that Banku will win but Powers sold the fight with his words and the public were enticed by the comic appeal that came with both boxers. However, Ashie-Tagoe is much closer and it presents Ashie with an opportunity for revenge while Tagoe can settle it once and for all,” the promoter stated.

Boakye, who also promoted the much-publicised Powers-Banku Judgement Night bill, has cautioned the media to desist from speaking with Ashie and Tagoe without permission from their management teams, saying it will result in the boxers asking for an increase in their purse.
