Alhaji Tofiq defends under-fire Bombers coach

Ace boxing promoter, Alhaji Tofiq, is unhappy with persons he called “detractors of Asare” in apparent reference to certain individuals maligning Ofori Asare, the head coach of the national amateur boxing team.

He condemned those calling for the head of the  Black Bombers coach, saying the agitants’ call for Asare’s dismissal had no basis and lacked merit.

“Look at these great feats chalked up by the coach, both locally and internationally. Also, consider the titles he had won with fighters in recent times,  the international recognition he had brought to the country. Why are we paying him back this way?’’ asked Alhaji Tofiq, Chairman of Ambition Boxing Promotions.

He dismissed claims that the AIBA-trained coach picked only his boxers into the national team and neglected those from other gyms.

“Coach Asare has no hand in selecting amateur boxers to the national team for both national and international competitions.”

The veteran promoter continued, “the selections are done by a technical committee and any gym or coach who has an amateur boxer can bring him for selection’’.

He entreated the various coaches in their respective gyms to come together, confer and find solutions to the impasse.

The national coach, who recently guided Joseph Agbeko to defeat Colombian Luis Melendez to claim the IBO Bantamweight title in Accra last February, has denied the allegations.
