Agbeko dragged before GBA over debts

Joseph AgbekoFresh King Promotions, promoters of Joseph Agbeko’s recent world title-winning fight against Luis Melendez in Accra, has been hauled before the board of the Ghana Boxing Authority to answer questions over unpaid purses and other debts related to the fight.

Attending the same meeting is the International Boxing Organisation (IBO) bantamweight champion, Agbeko, who owns the promotional outfit, and the chief executive of Fresh King Promotions, Eben Noye.

An invite issued to this effect in Accra last Monday and signed by the Secretary General of the GBA, Patrick Johnson, said the meeting has been fixed for 3p.m. tomorrow “for a discussion on outstanding payments to licensees of the Ghana Boxing Authority, the National Sports Authority and other persons in the aftermath of the March 22, 2013 Joseph Agbeko vrs Luis Melendez fight”.

The star-studded bill left Fresh King Promotions indebted to a number of persons in relation to the bill which catapulted Agbeko to his third world title.

At the time, sources close to him suggested that sponsors were yet to honour their part of various contracts, while the bill itself yielded less than GH¢9,000.

Also to attend the meeting is referee Roger Barnor to officiated last Friday’s World Boxing Assotion International and World Boxing Organisation Africa super-featherweight title fight between Ghana’s Emmanuel Tagoe and Ronald Pontillas of the Philippines.

Questions have lingered over the performance of referee Barnor in the said fight, and the invite to the meeting, also scheduled for 3p.m. tomorrow, said the meeting will discuss “matters relating to officiating in the main bout of the Baby Jet Promotion of April 26”.

Meanwhile, boxer Emmanuel Tagoe of the Black Panther Gym of Accra and the chief second of the gym, and Michael Ansah and the chief second of the Sonia Boxing Gym have also been invited for reporting late into the ring on last Friday’s bill.
