Ennis-Hill out of World Championships

Jessica Ennis-Hill has withdrawn from this month’s World Athletics Championships to avoid more damage to the injury to the left Achilles that has derailed her season.

The Olympic heptathlon champion, 27, and her coach, Toni Minichiello, have taken the long-term view that an attempt to regain the world title is not worth the risk of aggravating her left ankle problem.

Only a gold medal would do, after all, and Ennis-Hill had no interest in travelling to Moscow just to make up the numbers. Instead, she will have to make do with her husband, Andy, sneaking re-runs of ‘Super Saturday’ on the television to try and cheer her up.

Ennis-Hill said: “He’s going to be so mad with me. I think he likes to remind me of what I have achieved, because you get kind of wrapped up in this moment of being injured.

“At least I’ve always got the fact that I have achieved some great things already. Not everyone can achieve  an Olympic title,  but I’ll have that forever.

“But to say I am gutted is an understatement. No athlete likes to miss the chance to compete at a major championships — they don’t come round that often.”
