Use skills to manage political environment

Afotey Agbo, Volta Regional MinisterThe Volta Regional Minister, Mr Joseph Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo, has urged journalists to use their skills to manage the political environment with facts.

He said the government was committed to the freedom of the media to enable it to uphold the core values of peace, unity and coherence in the society and said they must always strive to play their conventional role of holding the government accountable.

Mr Afotey-Agbo was addressing a press soiree for media practitioners in the Volta Region at his residence in Ho yesterday.

He acknowledged the hard work of journalists in the Volta Region and their contributions to achievements so far, adding that they should plan ahead for the development of the region and should equally inform the people on situations in the region at any time.

Mr Afotey-Agbo recalled the establishment of the Media Development Fund by the government and said it was intended to offer quality training to journalists and that they should take advantage of the fund to build capacity in their profession.

He announced a donation of GHc2,000 to the Volta GJA for their welfare programmes.

In an address, the Volta Regional Chairman of the GJA, Mr Victor Kwawukume, said the media in the region was committed to the development of the region but were sometimes wrongfully condemned for coming out with unpleasant reports.

He said the priority of journalists was the permanent interest in development and would, therefore, check any deviation on the steady course of development in the region.

The Volta Police Dance Band provided music and present at the soiree were the Ho Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Isaac Kotobisah, the Regional Police Commander, Mr Alex Bedie, the regional chairman of the National Democratic Congress(NDC), Mr Kwasi Aboagye and other dignitaries.
