Tamale: Parties to stage street protest on electricity tariffs

Opposition political parties in the Northern Region have planned to embark on a street protest on August 22, 2016 in Tamale to press home their demand on government to reduce electricity tariffs to at least 50 per cent.

The demonstration dubbed “Di Miiya” in Dagbani which literally means “Times Are Tough” would be staged in the Tamale metropolis to also draw the attention of the ruling government to the “worsened plight” of people in the Northern region.

The Northern Regional Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Sule Salifu made this known at a press conference in Tamale on Monday.

The press conference was attended by representatives from the Convention People’s Party (CPP), People National Convention (PNC), and All Peoples Congress (APC).

Mr Salifu said the NDC government under President John Dramani Mahama has taken people in the Northern Region for granted.

“We are determined to show to the whole world that President Mahama and his government cannot continue to take us for granted and treat the people of the north as if we are only good for votes”, he stated.

According to him, President Mahama “has shown that he simply does not care about the fact that more and more people here in the north are struggling just to put a single meal on the dining table for the family.”

Mr Salifu urged residents in the region to come out in their numbers to support the demonstration on the planned date.
