‘Sustain the rising fortune in G/Accra’

The flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, has climaxed his ‘Rise and Build’ tour of the country in Tema with a call on party members to sustain the rising fortunes of the party in the Greater Accra Region.

He, therefore, urged members to forge unity and work hard to ensure victory in the 2016 general election.

Speaking to party executives, parliamentary candidates, former Members of Parliament and ministers as well as party sympathisers at the Our Lady of Mercy Senior High School park on Sunday, Nana Akufo-Addo said the vision of the party for Election 2016 in the Greater Accra Region was to win majority of the parliamentary seats and the popular votes.

"Right from Nkrumah's time in the 1951 elections until now, they say you win Greater Accra, you win Ghana. We have to win Greater Accra to win Ghana in 2016," he said.
Nana Akufo-Addo said the NPP was focused on rebuilding the country, which was gradually being destroyed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and added that the goal of the NPP in 2017 onwards was to give the country a strong economy, a new economy, an economy backed by modern and strong industrial base.

He said the government intended to improve the country’s educational system and revive the National Health Insurance System (NHIS) so all the people of Ghana, especially the poor and the vulnerable, could benefit.

Party unity

He tasked parliamentary candidates, regional and constituency executives to initiate steps to foster unity for the party to win the 2016 election.

He specifically tasked the newly elected parliamentary candidates from the Shai Osudoku, Tema West, Okaikwei South, Weija Gbawe, Krowor, Ablekuma West and Klotey Korle constituencies to reach out to their fellow aspirants and bring them on board in their respective campaigns to ensure total victory in 2016.

The voting patterns for the two main political parties — NDC and the NPP — in the Greater Accra Region indicate that it has been a close contest in the last three elections.

For instance, the NDC in 2004 garnered support from 46.64 per cent of the 2,098,780 registered voters, while the NPP got 51.71 per cent.

Even though the party was still in opposition in 2008, the NDC managed to increase its percentage to 52.11 out of the total number of 2,514,739 registered voters, with the ruling NPP settling for 46.03 per cent.

The NDC, in the run-off in 2008, came back stronger with 54.45 per cent of the total number of 2,514,739 registered voters, while the NPP sunk further by obtaining 45.54 per cent of the total number of registered voters in the region.

In 2012, the NDC, which had been elected to form a government, had dwindling fortunes in the Greater Accra Region with 52.31 per cent of the votes, while the opposition NPP increased its stakes by snatching 46.92 per cent votes, which was a slight improvement over its performance in 2008.
