The campaign team of Mr Kwadjo Owusu Afriyie, Aka Sir John, one of the General Secretary aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has described as false a story currently making the rounds on several media outlets that he is the subject of an investigation by the Ghana Revenue Authority and the Economic and Organised Crime Office for non-payment of tax.
“Clearly, the story, written by the “NPP News Digest,” which suddenly sprang up two days to the national delegates conference of the NPP, is aimed at causing disaffection for Sir John in Saturday’s conference,” a statement signed by Mr Frank Asiedu Bekoe, co-ordinator of Sir John’s Campaign, stated.
According to the statement, the story had been fabricated.
It asked why for such a grievous offence as withholding tax from the state, none of the state agencies mentioned by the publishers of the story (GRA and EOCO) had not bothered to contact Sir John so far something it described as strange.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Sir John has never defaulted on any of his tax obligations to the state and is not the subject of any investigations by state agencies in this regard,” the statement added.
It concluded by urging NPP delegates and the general public to disregard such falsehood clearly aimed at derailing the campaign of the winning candidate for the position of General Secretary of the NPP, who is Sir John.
