What Akufo-Addo told Chief Justice on legal education reforms (DOCUMENT)

Law students have been calling for reforms in legal education in Ghana. To press home their demands, the students on Monday, October 7, 2019 undertook a street protest in Accra.

The students are of the belief that there is a deliberate attempt by the General Legal Council (GLC) to unfairly and unjustifiably restrict the number of applicants who qualify to undergo professional legal education and pass out every year.

Prior to their protest, the students on a visit to President Akufo-Addo on May 6, 2019, petitioned him to address the mass failure of students at the Ghana School of Law.

President Akufo-Addo, upon receiving their petition, subsequently wrote to the Chief Justice, Justice Sophia Akuffo, to address the concerns of the students.

The letter, dated May 7, 2019, pointed out six issues which in President Akufo-Addo's view, required the General Legal Council’s urgent attention.
