The decision to suspend Dr Tamakloe, which was conveyed by the Regional Chairman for the party, Mr Ishmael Ashittey, followed a petition brought before the party by a member in the Ayawaso constituency.

Undermine peace and unity

The petitioner, Stephen Asante, accused Dr Tamakloe of conducting himself in a way that undermined the peace and unity of the party.

The Regional Chairman wrote to Dr Tamakloe on December 31 announcing his suspension from the party.

However, the regional executive of the party was yet to hear Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe’s side of the allegation.

According to the letter, a committee had been set up by the regional executive to investigate the matter and give Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe an opportunity to respond to the claims made against him.

Latest suspension

Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe is the latest suspension victim of the NPP.

The founder member of the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition was handed a letter recently to that effect by the elephant family’s Greater Accra arm.

It is not clear what triggered his suspension, since he had not been given the opportunity to state his case but checks within the party revealed that the leadership of the NPP found some of his past comments concerning the party unsavoury and a breach of some provisions of Ghana's biggest opposition party.

Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe becomes the fourth prominent member of the NPP to be suspended, but the first victim in 2016. Three national executive members: Chairman Paul Afoko, Second Vice-Chair Sammy Crabbe and General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong were suspended in turns late last year for various acts of indiscipline.
