NPP, NDC must help heal nation - Opuni

The General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana (CCG), Rev Dr Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, has stressed the need for the two major political parties to come together to help heal the wounds of the country.

He said the situation where the political party in government spent two to three years looking for the faults of its predecessor to punish and everyone looking for an opportunity to destroy was a manifestation of the pain of yesteryears.

That situation, he explained, had resulted in the absence of consensus building in Parliament and the tension in public discourse.

Appearing as a guest on: “A Walk with Jesus” on Joy FM last Sunday, Rev Dr Opuni-Frimpong said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) must come together to help heal Ghana of the wounds of history.

“If we don’t work on this, our future as a country is threatened,” he said.

According to him, Ghana could not be built on a foundation of pain, insults, punishment and unforgiveness.

He said there were very decent professionals who had remained silent in public discourse for fear of being labelled, insulted and destroyed by Ghanaians.

Sharing his views on the lessons African leaders could learn from the late Nelson Mandela, Rev Dr Opuni-Frimpong said after spending 27 years in prison, Mandela came out talking and practising forgiveness, reconciliation, peace and unity.

Those values, he said, were ingrained in Mandela in his youth at home, in church and in school.

He said former President Mandela knew when to quit but said that was not the situation on the continent.

He said the problem did not only exist in government but also in churches, in mosques and other places, saying pastors who should be exiting were still at post occupying high seats.

He stressed the need for the country not to underestimate the power of moral education, as it contributed significantly to the nurturing of upright and selfless leaders.

Rev Dr  Opuni-Frimpong said if the country failed to invest in the formation of the youth, “then we should not expect a better adult”.

He said with the right upbringing and training, Ghana could get to its desired destination.
