NDC members against renominating Yamoa-Ponko

Afrifa Yamoa Ponko - Ejisu Municipal Chief ExecutiveSome executive members and youth of the Ejisu Constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have appealed to President John Dramani Mahama not to renominate Mr Afrifa Yamoa-Ponko, their Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

The group staged a demonstration on Tuesday and alleged that the MCE had no respect for party members.

The spokesperson of the group, Mr Raphel Mensah, who is also a constituency executive member, alleged that Mr Yamoa-Ponko’s antagonistic character had seriously affected the smooth operation of the assembly.

He also said that the MCE recently caused the arrest of the NDC Constituency  chairman, Mr Kofi Acheampong, for allegedly operating a sand and stone business without a licence.

Mr Mensah said that allegation was calculated to tarnish the reputation of the  chairman.

According to Mr Mensah, it was a job which the chairman had done for so many years; he was the chairman of Sand and Stone Contractors Association in the area.

Therefore, he could not operate his business without the requisite documents.

He added that a number of complaints had been made to the leadership of the party  for redress.

He also alleged that the MCE was going round bragging that he had already received his appointment letter because the four-year period which was the mandate given to chief executives had not elapsed.

Mr Mensah indicated that though the President had the prerogative of appointing MCEs, the group was pleading with him not to renominate Mr Yamoa-Ponko, and  said “it will not augur well for both the party and the people, if he is re-appointed”.

When contacted, Mr Yamoa-Ponko, shouted, “You should not listen to those foolish people and should not waste my time on them!” and continued, “You shouldn’t have stooped  so low to listen to those people.“
