In 2009, the NDC government led by ex-President John Evans Atta Mills set aside September 21, the birthday of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President, as Founder’s Day.

However, the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has tabled a proposal to shift the commemoration to August 4 to celebrate several other individuals they believe played key roles in the attainment of Ghana’s independence and maintain September 21 as a memorial day for Dr Nkrumah.

Both days August 4 and September 21 are to be observed as public holidays, per the new proposal by President Akufo-Addo.
