According to the acting General Secretary of the NDC, Mr Koku Anyidoho, Ideally, the day would have afforded the NDC family another opportunity to organise various activities to mark the day.

However, in view of the calamity that hit the nation last week, and the state of mourning it found itself, the NDC is calling off the party’s anniversary activities, he explained in a statement Monday.

By this, all party members are expected to take note, be conscious of the mood of the nation and act in ways that would not offend the feelings of the time, Mr Anyidoho stated.

While wishing the souls of the departed persons peaceful resting places in the world beyond, Mr Anyidoho encouraged the NDC ranks to join hands in clean up exercises nationwide, support blood donation, join Muslim prayers on Friday, as well as church services on Sunday.

The NDC was founded by Jerry John Rawlings who was Head of State of Ghana from 1981 to 1993 and the President of Ghana from 1993 to 2001. The NDC was formed ahead of elections in 1992 and in 1996, returned Rawlings to power. Rawlings' second term ended in 2001. The NDC lost the presidency in the 2000 election and it was not until the 2008 that it regained it with candidate John Atta Mills.

The NDC's party symbol is an umbrella with an eagle's head on top. Party colors are red, white, green and black.

Internationally, the NDC is a member of the Progressive Alliance and Socialist International.

On December 9, 2012, the Electoral Commission of Ghana announced the NDC's candidate John Dramani Mahama president-elect after a hotly contested race in which he won 50.7% of votes cast.
