A Legal practitioner, Mr Abubakar Mutiu-Rahman, has declared his intention to contest the position of the national youth organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) come October this year.
That, he said, was to bring dynamism, cohesion and hope to the youth wing of the party.
Currently, Mr Mutiu-Rahman said, the youth wing of the NDC was dormant and that the party needed a more dedicated, media-friendly person and one with the capacity to mobilise and lead the youth of the party.
In an interview with the Daily Graphic, Mr Mutiu-Rahman, who is presently the Upper West Regional Youth Organiser of the NDC, said even though the government had initiated a lot of youth-centred programmes, which are geared towards empowering young people, not much was being projected to entice the youth to buy into these important initiatives.
“Such a situation means our youth wing is dormant and so this is the time the NDC needed people with dedication, much energy and the capacity to mobilise the youth of the country to rally behind the government,” he stressed.
Background
The NDC has earmarked the month of August to elect its constituency executives and September for the election of regional executives.
The national election of the party, which has been slated for October 24 and 25 will, however, be preceded by the election of the national youth and women’s organisers on October 19, 2014.
Composition
The electoral college for the election of the national youth organiser position is made up of all the constituency youth organisers and their deputies from the 275 constituencies, accredited Tertiary Education Institution Network (TEIN), presidents and women commissioners, as well as regional youth organisers and their deputies.
The women’s organiser position also has the regional women organisers and their two deputies and also constituency women organisers and their deputies, constituting the electoral college.
Achievements
Cataloguing some of his achievements as a regional youth organiser, Mr Mutiu-Rahman said, “I am the first youth organiser of the party to establish a functional youth secretariat furnished with computers”.
“I also held a series of fora to sensitise the youth to various programmes initiated by the government for the youth,” he said, and appealed to the youth of the party to support him in his bid to revive their hope and the party as well.
He said his role in ensuring a hundred per cent voting pattern for President John Mahama was enough testimony of his influence as a youth leader of the party.
