‘Let’s commend government for checking corruption’

The United Cadres Front (UCF) of the National Democratic Congress has observed that the state security apparatus – Military, Police, Prisons, Immigration and Customs, if ably supported by fearless citizens, the war on corruption will surely be won.

‘’We strongly believe if the state security agencies become more professional and act as such, those who dare to bribe them to cover up their anti-state and nefarious acts will have no option but to resign. That will surely embolden the citizenry to also provide the much-needed tip-offs to assist in nipping corruption in the bud’’ it observed.

Reacting to what is happening in the National Service outfit, the UCF said it was just a tip of the iceberg of such scandalous and dubious ways of making corruption a permanent feature in our state institutions.

The statement of UCF, which was signed by the General Secretary, Mr Efanam Felix Nyaku, stated that the fight against corruption had been more Herculean since most of the bodies which were established to check such untoward acts were themselves immersed in that canker.

The statement said even if and when one was caught, there was a way one could bribe oneself out of it.

“However, the unfortunate practice changed because a few public-spirited ones, who were incorruptible such as the National Security personnel, refused to collect the huge sum of blood money that was offered to close the investigation,” it said.

The UCF statement highly commended the spirit of patriotism shown by the officers, saying they had defied the status quo and considered professionalism as their watchword.

‘’They have rekindled the spirit of our forebear, who sacrificed their blood and toil to lay the foundations of our motherland,’’ the statement said.

In their candid view, it would take the actions of the National Security personnel and God-fearing citizens to help fight corruption at all fronts.

It said that would mean emulating the example of the few who had exposed such a manhole of theft in the National Service outfit in the face of a bottomless pit of corruption.
