Let family members be at forefront of conflicts - Politicians urged

The Youth Chaplain for the Kumasi Archdiocese of the Catholic Church, Reverend Fr Louis Adu-Poku, has asked politicians to let their family members be at the forefront of their political conflicts before influencing others to do such things.

That, according to him, would ensure that their family members are the first to experience arrests, injuries and deaths that accompany such conflicts.

He also asked the youth not to be influenced by money but rather muster courage and ask the politicians to ensure that their family members lead the evil acts and experience the repercussions.

Peaceful walk

Rev. Fr Adu-Poku announced this when he addressed the youth from the Kumasi Archdiocese of the Catholic Church after leading them to embark on a peaceful walk through some principal streets of Kumasi.

The three-hour walk, on the theme: “Catholic Youth in the Park,” started from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) Roundabout through Parks and Gardens area, Santase Roundabout and ended at the Opoku Ware School Park.

The march was aimed at educating the general public, especially the youth, on why they should ensure that the upcoming general election for the nation was peaceful.

In attendance were youth groups from the Nyinahini, Amakom, Suame, Kumasi and Offinso deaneries of the Catholic Church.

Placards

Some of the placards they carried had messages like: “Embrace peace, ignore violence; EC, be fair to all parties; You cannot rule an empty state; We are all one people; God save Ghana in 2016 election; No peace, no service and Avoid being a refugee in Ghana.”

The youth chaplain urged the youth to think about their future, their families and the nation as a whole before taking money to indulge in any form of electoral violence, adding that the amount of money taken for those acts could not sustain them for the rest of their lives.

Rev. Fr Adu-Poku was not happy that although Ghana has always been described as a very religious country, the behaviour of most people in the country did not portray that. He therefore called on all religious groups to let their beliefs reflect in  their daily activities.

He appealed to the elderly, especially people in leadership positions, to be role models for the youth since the youth learn and take inspiration from them.

Prevailing peace

The Kumasi Archdiocesan Youth Chairman, Mr Daniel Opoku, said as a people who have always been described as the beacon of peace in Africa, there was the need for all Ghanaians to contribute their quota to sustain that image of the country.

He stated that as the electioneering was gearing up, everyone must watch and control activities that have impact on the prevailing peace in the country.
