Just before officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) commenced the voting process last week Wednesday, there was a call from members of the assembly that the voting was not necessary since they had all agreed to support the nominee.

The assembly members, therefore, did not only support and convincingly approve of the nomination of the candidate but also nearly refused to vote but for the interpretation of the legal implications, among other reasons.

According to them, their interest is in the development of the entire district and not selfish interests, which could derail the progress made.

That notwithstanding, the District EC official, Mr Festus Owiredu Amankwaah, explained that the EC would be very glad not to hold  elections but for legalities associated with the process,  voting must take place, which they did.

At the close of the election, all  42 assemblymen and women present endorsed the candidature of Mr Pascal Dere to be the next  Lawra DCE, amidst wild cheers.

The exemplary feat, exhibited by the assembly members of the Lawra District which is one of the very old districts in the Upper West Region, brought to the fore the unity of purpose among members of the assembly. It also portrayed the maturity of the assembly members.

With this, the assembly members of the Lawra District have shown the way  that, though they may have their political biases, personal interests among other things, they were in the assembly to partner other stakeholders in pushing the development agenda of their districts.

In his acceptance remarks, Mr Dere expressed appreciation to all who contributed in diverse ways to confirm him as the DCE and pledged  for the  development of the district.

He was equally grateful to President Mahama for the honour done him.

The Upper West Regional Minister, Dr Ephraim Avea Nsoh, for his part also called on the DCEs to collaborate effectively with members of the assembly in achieving their objectives.

He also cautioned that it would be suicidal for the leadership of the assemblies if they tried to lord over the people who had put them at the helm of affairs at the district level.
