LaDMA to focus on building resilient local economy

The Municipal Chief Executive of the La Dadekotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA), Mrs Gladys Mann-Dedey, has said that her tenure would focus on building an inclusive industrialised and resilient local economy for the municipality.

In line with this goal, she said that the assembly would partner with private companies to establish a fish processing centre “to provide jobs for the people while it generates income for the assembly.”

Mrs Mann-Dedey was speaking at the public hearing on the preparation of the Medium Term Developmental Plan (MTDP) 2018-2021 that was held at the Ghana International Trade-Fair Centre in Accra on Tuesday.

“In LaDMA, we do a lot of fishing; therefore, we are going to bring in an industry or factory that processes fish. During this season, we get a lot of fish that sometimes go waste because we do not have storage facilities. If a company comes into the country, they can be directed and given a business operating permit to site their factory within this municipality where they can get raw materials and also process the fish,” she said.

Meeting

The stakeholders presented the challenges they faced in the municipality, while they deliberated on the MTDP for 2018-2021.

They raised concerns over the revenue under-performance of the assembly, highlighting on that from the beaches, development of the Kpeshie Lagoon, poor maintenance of street lights and the inadequate fishing infrastructure.

Goals

Announcing that the new framework will aid the development of the municipality, Mrs Mann-Dedey said the assembly would create an equitable, healthy and disciplined society and build safe and well-planned communities to protect the natural environment.

She added that the assembly would build efficient and dynamic institutions and strengthen Ghana’s role in international affairs.

She assured the stakeholders that the assembly would address the challenges that confronted the developmental status of the municipality to the satisfaction of the people.

Vision

The Member of Parliament for the La Dadekotopon Constituency, Mr Vincent Sowah Odotei, urged the stakeholders to consider the vision of LaDMA and work towards achieving it.

“I want us to adopt an attitude that will make this constituency the best in Ghana,” he said

Mr Odotei expressed the hope that revenue projections were not enough so the assembly should sit up and deliberate on strategies to generate enough revenue.

Municipality’s challenges

For her part, the Planning Officer at LaDMA, Mrs Audrey Smock Amoah, identified revenue under-performance, inadequate fishing infrastructure, existence of vulnerable groups, poor environmental sanitation and waste management practices, inadequate food safety training and services as challenges that confront the development of the municipality.

Other challenges include poor road network, absence of drains, flooding, high incidence of malaria, inadequate financing of the health sector and poor settlement.

In its quest to become the best administered assembly which offers highly appreciable development for its people, Mrs Amoah said the assembly would complete the La Market at Maajanor.
