Kempes launches ambitious campaign to wrest Tema East seat

The National Democratic Congress (NDC)  Parliamentary candidate for the Tema East Constituency, Mr Robert Kempes Ofosuware, has launched an ambitious campaign to overturn the three votes deficit that saw him lose to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2012 election.

Mr Ofosuware, who lost to the NPP’s Daniel Titus-Glover after several recounts of the ballots, said he was leaving no stone unturned to emerge victorious over his fierce contender and incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for the area.

With 34 days to the elections, which will see some 93,398 registered voters cast their ballot, Mr Ofosuware is urging supporters and sympathisers of the NDC in the constituency to embark on an aggressive house-to-house campaign to consolidate the gains of the party in the constituency.

House-to-house campaign

Addressing a mammoth rally at Tema Newtown last Sunday, Mr Ofosuware indicated that the NDC-led government had spearheaded numerous development projects in the constituency and, therefore, deserved to be given the nod.

Several speakers at the event, including the 2016 Campaign Coordinator of the NDC, Mr Kofi Adams, Ghana’s Ambassador to Egypt, Alhaji Saiid Sinare, the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the party, Mr Joseph Ade Coker, all reiterated the need for intensified house-to-house campaign.

“Complacency can kill our determination to retain power at the polls, and I will entreat you not to rest on your oars to push forward the transformation agenda,” Mr Adams said.

Eulogising Mr Ofosuware, he said  the candidate had track record in youth and community development and, therefore, deserved to be given the nod to represent the people of Tema East.

The Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Isaac Ashai Odamtten, also queried the achievements of the incumbent NPP MP in the constituency.

“If you go to Tema Central, the MP has used his share of the MP’s common fund to rehabilitate the Community four football park, constructed a large shed for antenatal mothers at the Tema General Hospital, but the same cannot be said for Tema East,” Mr Odamtten said.

Ballot recount

A Vice Chairperson of the party, Madam Anita Desoso, task Mr Ofosuware not to yield to a request for recount of ballot on voting day.

According to her, such a move saw him being caught off guard in 2012, and thus gave his opponents the room to manipulate the recounted ballots to their advantage.
