I won’t respond to ‘Opana’ Freddy Blay’s ‘rabbit’ press conference - Mahama

President John Mahama has stated that he would not respond to a press conference held by the Acting Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Freddy Blay, whom he referred to as ‘Opana’.

Mr Blay had used the press conference to condemn comments made by the President to the effect that NPP’s presidential running mate, Dr Mahamamudu Bawumia, was not qualified to criticise him.

Touching on that development during his final ‘Changing Lives, Transforming Ghana’ rally in Ho in the Volta Region on Thursday, President Mahama said: “I’ve had my say, and don’t intend to respond to that press conference.

“I said in Accra that when a hunter heads to the bush to go and shoot an elephant, he doesn’t make time to stand and shoot at any rabbit that passes along. The press conference is a rabbit press conference. I won’t have time for rabbits because I am going to shoot an elephant."

“On the day that Opana was doing his press conference to respond to me, somebody was also doing a press conference to say he is taking them to court,” he added in reference to a press conference organised by the suspended National Chairman of the party, Mr Paul Afoko.

Mocking the internal wrangling within the NPP, President Mahama said he could not tell who was chairman in the party.

He said while Mr Freddy Blay had said he was the Acting National Chairman, Mr Paul Afoko was also insisting that he was the legitimate National Chairman.

In what appeared to be a criticism of NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, President Mahama said, “One mark of competent leadership is to manage people and unite people.”

The President also criticised NPP MPs, who he said had been sleeping in Parliament.
