A presidential hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has said he welcomes keen competition.
He said the NPP was a democratic party and that he was undaunted by the number of presidential aspirants seeking to be the party’s flag bearer in the 2016 elections.
Nana Akufo-Addo, who was in Wa on Monday, to thank delegates of the region for the 100 per cent endorsement they gave him at the Special Electoral College, paid courtesy calls on opinion leaders and some important personalities in the municipality as part of his “Thank You tour.”
Nana Akufo-Addo first called on the Chief Imam of Wa at his residence. His next port of call was the place of the Yerenaa, Alhaji Mogtar, the head of the Muslim community in Wa.
Nana Addo explained to him that his purpose for being in the region was to thank delegates who had voted in the Special Electoral College of the party, with the Upper West Region giving him a 100 per cent endorsement.
He said he had come to the Yerenaa, as he had done on previous occasions, to seek his blessing and prayers for the task ahead.
Alhaji Mogtar praised Nana Akufo-Addo for the patience and tolerance he had exhibited over the years, adding that “Allah rewards patient people. The fact that you have not given up is an indication that you have something good to offer the people of Ghana.”
While in Wa, Nana Akufo-Addo also attended the funeral of Alhaji Tahir Momeen, an Imam and elder of the party who was also the father of the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for Wa Central Constituency, Alhaji Isaahaku Tahir Momeen. He explained to the gathering the purpose of his visit to Wa, and that he decided to attend the funeral when he heard of the death of the NPP stalwart. He stated that it was important to acknowledge the contribution of the Imam to the growth of the NPP in Wa, and expressed his sympathies and condolences to the family and to Alhaji Momeen.
Nana Akufo-Addo also paid a visit to the family of Zainat Issahaku, the young woman who was involved in an accident and died the day Nana Akufo-Addo last visited the Upper West Region ahead of the Special Electoral College. The family of Zainat thanked Nana Addo for finding time to commiserate with them , despite sending Mr Boakye Agyarko to attend the funeral on his behalf.
The family indicated to Nana Addo that they were happy with the gesture, noting that it was an indication that Nana Akufo-Addo would never forget people who work for the party. They also prayed for his success in the NPP’s presidential primary and also in the 2016 general election.
