He has also promised that the government will construct roads leading to food production centres to boost agriculture and other commercial activities in the region.

President Mahama gave the promise at a durbar of the chiefs and people of the Brong Ahafo Region held in his honour at the Jubilee Park in Sunyani last Thursday.

He used the occasion to thank the chiefs and the people of the region for their support in the December 2012 general election.
Earlier in day, the President had inaugurated the 400-megawatts Bui hydroelectric project in the Banda District in the region.

Education

President Mahama said the government would provide hostels and lecture halls for the University of Energy and Natural Resources in Sunyani.
The university was established by the late President Mills, in fulfilment of a promise he made to the chiefs and people of the region.

The President said the government would also improve on infrastructure at the Kintampo College of Health and Well Being for it to train more middle-level health personnel to serve at the district and the community levels.

Electricity supply

President Mahama said with the inauguration of the Bui hydroelectric project, the country 's erratic power supply was over.

He said it was expected that the generating capacity of the country would move from 2,500 megawatts to 5,000 megawatts by 2016, a development that would make Ghana an exporter of electricity to neighbouring countries.

President Mahama paid glowing tribute to Dr Kwame Nkrumah, who envisioned the Bui Dam, former President J.A. Kufuor for starting the project and the late President Mills who continued the project.

Commendation by Nananom

The President of the Brong Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs and Yejihene, Pemampem Yaw Kagbrese V, who chaired the function, in his welcoming address, commended the government for the completion of the Bui hydroelectric project.

Nana Kagbrese appealed for the completion of the Ring Road in Sunyani to speed up the development of areas earmarked for residential accommodation, commercial and industrial activities.

The Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Mr Paul Evans Aidoo, in his address, said this year alone the Department of Feeder Roads had awarded 146 contracts across the region and tenders had been opened for major routine maintenance works on 23 roads, while several communities in the region had been provided with potable water.
