The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale Central, Prof. Seidu Mahama Alidu, has pledged to sustain interventions to support vulnerable people in the constituency as a practical way of honouring the memory of the late Former MP for the area, Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
Prof. Alidu made the pledge at a Qur’an recitation and charity event organised by him in collaboration with the Tamale Central Constituency Executives in memory of Dr Mohammed, in Tamale, a year after his passing.
He said the gesture was in recognition of Dr Mohammed’s contribution to Tamale Central, the Northern Region and the country, and reflected the values of service and compassion for which the late legislator was remembered.
Donation
As part of the programme, five widows and five orphans from each of the 18 electoral wards in the constituency were selected to benefit from the donation.
The beneficiaries received food items and other essential materials as part of the initiative, which combined prayers and remembrance with practical support for vulnerable members of the community.
Prof. Alidu said honouring the late MP should go beyond words and ceremonies, stressing the need to translate his legacy into acts that improved the lives of people, particularly the vulnerable.
He said similar initiatives would be organised in the future, with the intention of seeking Allah’s blessings for the departed soul.
Meanwhile, the Tamale Central MP also visited the family house of the late MP following a fire outbreak at the family residence in Tamale that occurred last Wednesday to commiserate with them.
As part of his support, he presented 10 packets of roofing sheets, three bags of rice and GH¢2, 000 to assist the family with thier immediate needs and recovery.
Murtala
Dr Mohammed, born on December 14, 1974, was a trained teacher who later pursued studies in development planning, international relations and diplomacy, law and political science.
He entered national politics as the NDC MP for Nanton in 2013 and subsequently served as Deputy Minister of Information and Media Relations and Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry under the John Mahama administration.
He returned to Parliament in 2021 as MP for Tamale Central and was re-elected in the 2024 general election. In February 2025, he was appointed Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation.
Dr Mohammed’s political career was cut short on August 6, 2025, when the Ghana Armed Forces helicopter conveying him and seven others to the Ashanti Region crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District.
All eight people on board died in the crash. Dr Mohammed was 50.
